Flamantique: antique French bioethanol stoves, no smoke, no flue, real flame!
Frequently Asked Questions
At Flamantique, we lovingly restore original French antique stoves and give them a new lease of life using modern bioethanol technology.
Real flames. Real warmth. No chimney required.
Here are the answers to some of the questions we’re asked most often.
Do your stoves actually produce heat?
Absolutely!
Our stoves aren’t just beautiful decorative pieces — they provide genuine warmth.
Think of the heat produced by a large radiator, but with the added pleasure of watching real, dancing flames.
They’re wonderful for adding extra warmth and atmosphere to a living room, dining room, conservatory or cosy corner.
Do I need a chimney or flue?
No! That’s the beauty of them!
Our stoves have been professionally converted to run on bioethanol, so there’s no need for a chimney, flue, gas connection or electricity.
Simply position your stove in a suitable, well-ventilated room, add the recommended fuel and enjoy.
No building work. No complicated installation.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes, we do!
We’re based in the beautiful French countryside, but our stoves travel all over the world.
We regularly organise international deliveries and carefully prepare our stoves for transport.
We ship throughout Europe and to many other countries, see our shipping page.
The only country we currently cannot supply is the United States.
Are bioethanol stoves safe?
Safety is extremely important to us. Every Flamantique stove is professionally adapted, carefully assembled and rigorously tested before leaving our workshop. We use purpose-designed bioethanol burners, securely fitted inside our restored antique stoves. As with any appliance producing a real flame, sensible precautions are essential.
Always follow the operating instructions, keep children and pets away from hot surfaces, and never add fuel to a lit or hot burner. Our stoves are designed for use in appropriately ventilated rooms.
How far should my stove be from a wall?
We recommend a minimum distance of 20 cm from a suitable non-combustible wall, subject to the specific installation instructions for your stove. Additional clearance may be necessary depending on the wall material and surrounding surfaces.Always keep your stove well away from curtains, upholstered furniture and other flammable materials.
What exactly is bioethanol?
Bioethanol is an alcohol-based fuel produced from renewable plant materials.
Unlike traditional wood-burning stoves, our bioethanol stoves don’t produce smoke, soot or ash. No logs to carry, no ashes to empty and no chimney to sweep! Bioethanol is produced from renewable resources, although its overall environmental impact depends on how it is manufactured and transported.
Where can I buy bioethanol?
It’s easy to find! Bioethanol fireplace fuel is widely available from DIY stores, home improvement retailers and online suppliers, including Amazon. Always choose good-quality bioethanol specifically intended for indoor fireplaces and compatible with your burner’s instructions.
Are they expensive to run?
Not at all!
Our standard burners typically consume around 350 ml of bioethanol over approximately 2½ hours.
At a fuel price of €3 per litre, that’s just over €1 for an evening of beautiful, real flames!
Actual consumption and running costs depend on the burner and the price of fuel.
Are they suitable for homes with pets?
We’re animal lovers ourselves! Our home is shared with rescued dogs, cats and other animals, so we understand how important safety is. As with any real fire or hot radiator, animals love them! They aren’t daft, and do sense the heat!
Are your stoves new?
Quite the opposite — and that’s what makes them special! Every Flamantique stove is a genuine piece of French history.
We rescue beautiful antique stoves, often over a century old, and carefully restore them by hand. We dismantle, clean, repair, repaint and polish each one before adapting it to modern bioethanol technology. Every stove has its own character, history and personality.
We’re artisans, not a factory.
